Take a Break to Stare at Something Beautiful

Above is St. Francis in the Desert,by Giovanni Bellini.  If you can’t see this (and many other works of art) in person, you should check them out at the new googleartproject.com.

Last summer, I made a special trip from New Haven to New York to see Bellini’s painting at the Fricke Gallery.  Now it’s at googleartproject.com, in beautiful and loving detail.  The site has wonderfully large reproductions of some of your favorite works of art, not to mention virtual tours of the museums and ways for you to learn more about your favorite art and artists.  Here’s a video primer:

No reproduction, not even one as meticulous as this, can compare to seeing a painting in person, but I found the interactive exhibits on this site compelling enough to win my attention all during my lunch break.  And then fourth period, and then fifth and sixth.

Right now, there are seventeen art museums that you can tour on the site, but they promise to add more in the future. Below are links to some of my favorite paintings from the site–you should go and find yours.

St. Francis in the Desert, by Giovanni Bellini
Venus of Urbino, by Tiziano

Sir Thomas More, by Hans Holbein, the Younger

The Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh
Grandcamp, Evening by Georges-Pierre Seurat
The Death of Socrates, by Jacques-Louis David
